Ministry through Music

Then Miriam the prophetess,… took a tambourine in her hand, and all the women followed her, with tambourines and dancing. Miriam sang to them: "Sing to the Lord, For he is highly exalted..." Exodus 15:20-21

Glorifying God through musical expression; this is the unique opportunity for anyone who wishes to share in the experience of our church choirs.  There are several ways to become involved in this most joyful activity.

During our Sunday worship service, the Praise Team provides some prelude music as well as leading the opening hymn or praise song.  The Chancel Choir adds to the introspective moments of the service by singing one anthem that will enhance the chosen scripture lessons or the sermon.   Throughout the year, there are special services, such as Ash Wednesday and Maundy Thursday where the choir or praise team will provide the musical portion.  We also strive to sing two anthems for Christmas Eve and Easter.

Our choir regularly sings September through May, leaving the summer months open for Special Music opportunities.  This is provided by individuals who volunteer to sing or perform instrumental pieces, whether or not they are members of the choir.

Bell ChoirThe West Newton United Presbyterian Church is very proud of its Handbell Choir. This instrumental ensemble performs several times a year during the worship service, usually providing special preludes and prayer responses, hymn descants, and also accompaniment for the Chancel Choir during an anthem.  As a choir, our skill level continues to increase, although our complement of ringers occasionally changes. The music we play is arranged for bells and the notes are marked accordingly for each ringer- so counting is the main requirement for playing.

Service through MusicWe choir members are not just about work!  Our joyfulness in evident in the fellowship and laughter shared by all.  Every summer the combined choirs have a picnic and someone (or several someones) is recognized as that year’s distinguished choir member, and receives a very handsome plaque.  This can be won for many different reasons, some are serious, some are humorous, but all are greatly appreciated!

Our rehearsals are held Wednesday evenings.  The Handbell Choir meets at 6:00 – 7:00 in a classroom off of the sanctuary.  The Chancel Choir meets from 7:00-8:00 in the sanctuary.  The Praise Team usually meets afterwards.  Everyone is welcome to attend! Back to top↑

Ministry through Prayer

The Prayer Chain is a telephone network of 14 people who receive and pass along prayer concerns. If you have a prayer concern and would like intercessory prayer, call or email the office to be linked to the Linked by Prayerprayer chain that is led by Phyllis. If you desire to become a prayer partner in the chain, also contact the office."The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer." Psalm 18:2.

Prayer Room - For anyone wishing for prayer on Sundays after the Worship Service, WNUPC has a team of rotating Prayer Partners who are willing to sit and offer intercessory prayer for you. Whether your prayer is to give thanks and praise to God, you are seeking comfort and assurance in a time of crisis, or you just want to talk, the Prayer Partners will meet you right where you are in life to pray with and for you. The Prayer Partners understand that some of the worries, hurts, bumps, and bruises we all experience can be difficult to share with someone. For that reason, be assured that everything expressed in the Prayer Room is held in strict confidence. Back to top↑
